Future Stars
What?
Future Stars is a soccer ministry with the focus on young boys. By teaching soccer we teach life and it helps them develop, build confidence and be part of a team where they are accepted and loved. As coaches we get to build relationships with them and become positive role models in their lives. Fatherlessness is a huge problem in South Africa. Soccer gives us a platform to be involved in the lives of children so we can be positive role models in their lives.
How?
We practise three times a week in Overcome and twice a week in Capricorn. The boys are all between 8 and 15 years old. Each practise includes warming-up, skill training, a life lesson, a fun match and a (mostly) healthy snack. Once a term we organise a fun outing to build deeper relationships and expose them to Cape Town.
Why?
Future Stars is a soccer ministry with the focus on young boys in the community. We use soccer as a platform to do life together, be involved in their lives and teach them life skills. We focus on the individual and personal growth and development of the children. Our hope is to see them growing up becoming responsible leaders in their families and communities.
A personal story
The now 15 year old Lodwa has been part of Future Stars since we started 5 years ago. We love journeying with this young man who we have seen growing into a responsible and respectable teenager. He has always shown dedication, teamwork and positivity to the team. When his house burned down 2 years ago we were able to help the family build a new place and we can say we have become family. Their humble and loving attitudes in the midst of trauma has taught us so much. The whole family has joined the church and in 2019 Lodwa got baptised. That same year he joined 5 of the coaches on a week long coaches training, where we learned about the heart and impact of a coach. It is amazing being part of the development of strengths and talents in the lives of these courageous youngsters!
